Pan

Pan, Henry’s 12-year-old son, is a bright, optimistic boy. He is honest, gentle, and kind, and surprises James time and again with his caring gestures. Pan is also loyal and brave. For example, when he, James, and Sukey are on the run, Pan stays behind to assist Sukey in the delivery of her child even after James runs away in fear.

But Pan changes dramatically over the course of the novel. At first, he is an innocent, carefree, good-natured child. After seeing first-hand how dehumanizing slavery is, Pan loses his youthful spirit. After he is captured, he watches as another captive boy, five-year-old Randall, becomes sick and dies as a result of the abuse he suffers at the hands of slave catchers. Later, en route to the North, a despairing Pan tells James that nothing matters anymore because “we all gonna die out here.” Pan is transformed from an optimistic child who believes that hard work is the ticket to success into a pessimistic young man who understands that race often determines a person’s fate.

When James tells Pan that he wants to start helping other black people escape slavery in the South, Pan’s energy returns. The promise of not only his own freedom but the potential of freedom for others who are suffering fills Pan with a feeling of hope once again.
